    Overview

    Detailing is the controlled cleaning, restoration, correction, and protection of every vehicle surface. This guide explains what each process changes, what it cannot change, how to do it safely, and when a professional is the better choice.

    A basic wash removes loose dirt. Decontamination removes material still bonded to the surface. Paint correction abrades a microscopic amount of paint to reduce visible defects. Wax, sealant, or ceramic coating adds a thin chemical protection layer. Paint protection film adds a much thicker sacrificial physical barrier. These jobs overlap, but they are not interchangeable.

    Start with the result you want, inspect the vehicle honestly, and use the least aggressive process that can reach that result. Preserving original material is more important than chasing a perfect reflection at any cost.

    The five-stage detailing model

    Wash → decontaminate → correct only if needed → protect → maintain. Skipping forward usually traps contamination, reduces durability, or creates more work later.

    Important limit

    Detailing cannot replace missing paint, repair cracked clear coat, permanently reverse failing film, remove corrosion hidden beneath a finish, or make an unsafe surface sound. Those require body, paint, trim, glass, upholstery, or film repair.

    Good beginner project

    Understand the Surface

    Paint, Clear Coat, and Defect Fundamentals

    Correction decisions make sense only when you understand what is being cleaned, levelled, or protected.

    Substrate

    Steel, aluminium, plastic, composite, or another body material. Paint-depth readings and repair methods behave differently on each.

    Primer

    Supports adhesion, corrosion control, filling, and colour uniformity. A visible primer-coloured scratch is beyond ordinary polishing.

    Colour coat

    Provides colour and effect. Modern basecoat is normally protected by clear coat; single-stage paint combines colour and gloss in one layer.

    Clear coat

    The transparent upper layer that supplies gloss and much of the UV and chemical protection. It is finite, and correction removes some of it.

    Paint-depth gauges have limits

    Many gauges read total film build, not clear coat alone. Basic magnetic/eddy-current gauges may not read plastic or composite panels. Compare many readings, recognise repainted panels, and never treat one number as permission to chase a defect.

    The fingernail test is only a warning

    A scratch that catches a nail may be deep, but one that does not catch can still be unsafe to remove. Lighting, paint history, location, panel edges, and measured film build all matter.

    Ceramic coating versus PPF

    Think of coating as a very thin chemical and maintenance layer, and PPF as a much thicker sacrificial impact layer. A compatible coating can sit over film, but it does not raise the film's impact rating.

    Inspect and plan

    Work in shade on cool surfaces. Record chips, loose trim, film edges, repaint clues, delicate finishes, corrosion, and pre-existing damage. Read every label and prepare personal protection.

    Prepare tools by zone

    Separate paint, wheels, tyres, glass, interior, engine-bay, coating, and dirty-job media. Mix products only to their stated dilution and never combine chemicals unless the manufacturer explicitly directs it.

    Clean wheels and tyres

    Usually work one cool wheel at a time before paint. Rinse, apply finish-safe cleaner, agitate with dedicated brushes, rinse thoroughly, and do not allow cleaner to dry. Avoid aggressive chemistry on unknown, hot, damaged, anodised, polished, or bare finishes.

    Pre-rinse and pre-wash

    Remove loose grit before touching paint. Foam can extend dwell and show coverage, but dwell and chemistry—not foam thickness alone—do the cleaning. Never let pre-wash dry.

    Contact wash

    Use lubricious automotive shampoo and clean media. Work from cleaner upper areas toward dirtier lower panels with straight, light passes. Turn or replace the media often; do not scrub grit into paint.

    Rinse and dry

    Final-rinse thoroughly. Use low-pressure sheeting where suitable, filtered air, or clean soft drying towels with a compatible drying aid. Blot or glide with minimal pressure; chase water from mirrors, badges, grilles, and seams.

    Inspect contamination

    On clean paint, feel gently through a thin clean bag and inspect for iron specks, tar, sap, mineral deposits, insects, overspray, or traffic film. Match the remover to the contaminant.

    Chemically decontaminate

    Use iron, tar, mineral, or organic-contamination products separately as directed. Rinse or neutralise as the label requires. Rewash if residue remains.

    Mechanically decontaminate only if needed

    Use fine clay media and generous lubrication with almost no pressure. Fold or clean it frequently and discard a dropped clay bar. Expect possible marring, especially on soft or dark paint.

    Inspect paint and measure where appropriate

    Use diffuse light for overall condition and focused lights from several angles for defects. Identify edges, ridges, thin areas, repaints, and places that should be masked or avoided.

    Perform a test spot

    Start with a mild pad/polish combination on a representative area. Clean residue, inspect in more than one light, and decide whether the result meets the agreed target before doing the entire vehicle.

    Correct and refine if justified

    Work small sections, keep pads clean, manage heat, use controlled arm speed and pressure, and avoid dwelling on edges or body lines. Refine after compounding when haze remains.

    Prepare for protection

    Remove polishing dust and oils using the protection maker's process. Check seams, badges, and trim. The surface must be compatible, dry, and residue-free—not merely shiny.

    Choose wax, sealant, spray protection, ceramic coating, PPF, or a compatible combination based on impact risk, budget, environment, desired durability, and willingness to maintain it.

    The safest method is the one that removes the current contamination with enough lubrication, enough clean media, and the least unnecessary contact.

    Two buckets are a system, not magic

    A separate rinse bucket can reduce dirt in wash solution, but clean media, pre-rinsing, section order, grit control, and gentle technique matter more than the bucket count alone.

    Drying is still contact

    Use high-absorbency towels or filtered air on truly clean surfaces. A drying aid may add lubrication. Dragging a saturated or contaminated towel can recreate marring immediately.

    Microfiber care matters

    Wash by use category with compatible detergent, avoid fabric softener, rinse thoroughly, dry on low heat or as the maker directs, and store clean towels sealed away from dust and debris.

    Pressure-washer care

    Use a suitable nozzle and distance, control recoil, protect hearing/eyes where appropriate, and avoid forcing water into seals, vents, sensors, electrical connectors, loose film edges, stone chips, damaged paint, wheel bearings, or delicate trim.

    Water management

    Hard-water minerals become deposits when water dries. Work panel by panel, keep surfaces wet until rinsing, dry promptly, and consider filtered or demineralised final-rinse water where spotting is a persistent problem.

    Decontamination is contaminant-specific. Stronger is not automatically better, and multiple reactive products should not be stacked together.

    Wash and identify

    Do not diagnose through loose dirt. Test products in a small area and confirm compatibility with paint, wheel finish, film, trim, glass, or coating.

    Treat one contaminant class at a time, follow dwell instructions, never allow the product to dry, and rinse fully before another chemistry step.

    Reassess before clay

    If the surface is now smooth, stop. If bonded particles remain, use the finest appropriate clay media with generous lubrication and almost no pressure.

    Inspect for marring

    Clay removes contamination, not scratches. On soft paint it may introduce haze that needs polishing, so mechanical decon should not be automatic.

    What Paint Correction Really Means

    Correction levels the upper paint surface so light reflects more evenly. It is permanent defect removal, but the removed paint is also permanent.

    Two-step or multi-stage correction

    A cutting stage removes heavier defects, followed by refinement to remove haze. It costs more time and paint and is not automatically the better answer.

    Decide whether the car needs better gloss, a strong improvement, or show-level refinement. Agree that some deeper defects should remain to protect paint life.

    Wash, decontaminate, dry, mask sensitive edges and trim, inspect repair history, and measure paint where the gauge and substrate allow meaningful readings.

    Choose a representative test area

    A section with average defects is more useful than the easiest panel. Start mild: finishing or one-step polish with a suitable foam pad.

    Prime, spread, and work the product

    Follow pad and liquid instructions. Keep the pad flat where possible, use overlapping passes, a controlled section size, and only the pressure and speed needed for the combination.

    Clean the pad often

    Spent abrasive, removed paint, and residue reduce consistency and can create haze. Use multiple clean pads for a vehicle rather than trying to finish with one saturated pad.

    Stop conditions

    Stop for unstable or peeling paint, colour transfer that is unexpected, excessive heat, a dry or grabbing pad, rapidly thinning edge readings, cracking, swelling, strike-through risk, or a defect whose safe removal is uncertain.

    Wet sanding is advanced repair work

    Sanding can remove texture and severe defects but removes material very quickly and requires controlled grit progression, measurements, edge management, and full machine refinement. It is not a beginner shortcut to gloss.

    Chemical Protection

    Automotive ceramic coatings cure into a very thin protective layer. They can improve cleaning, gloss, slickness, and resistance to some chemicals and contamination, but they do not make paint invincible.

    Read the exact system instructions

    Application area, temperature, humidity, ventilation, flash behaviour, towel sequence, layer timing, first-water exposure, and full cure differ between products. Generic timing is unsafe.

    Create a controlled workspace

    Use clean, dry, bright, well-ventilated conditions with stable temperature and minimal dust. Arrange applicators, levelling towels, final-buff towels, lighting, gloves, and a discard plan before opening the bottle.

    Decontamination wash

    When behaviour weakens, remove traffic film, iron, and minerals with coating-compatible products before applying a topper or declaring failure.

    Topper discipline

    A topper can change slickness and water behaviour, but it may mask the base coating. Use only compatible products and avoid stacking residues blindly.

    High spots

    A fresh high spot may level with the coating system's approved method. Once cured, it may require polishing and reapplication. Do not keep adding solvent or product without the maker's guidance.

    Durability claims need context

    Climate, UV exposure, kilometres, storage, winter salts, water hardness, wash chemicals, abrasion, prep quality, and maintenance all affect service life. Treat advertised years as system claims with conditions, not a universal countdown.

    Physical Protection

    Paint Protection Film (PPF): Coverage, Installation, Care, and Limits

    PPF is a sacrificial urethane film designed to absorb many minor impacts, abrasion, staining events, and road wear before they reach paint. It is physical protection, not permanent armour.

    Assess paint and repair history

    Film should go over sound, fully cured, compatible paint. Chips, contamination, oxidation, lifting clear, and poor repairs remain visible and may complicate future removal.

    Match impact zones, gloss/matte appearance, budget, edge expectations, warranty terms, and planned ownership. Ask which edges will be wrapped and where seams will sit.

    Why PPF fitting is usually professional work

    Dust control, blade safety, stretch, alignment, solution control, sensors, badges, trim removal, complex curves, and the risk of cutting paint make large-panel installation a skilled trade rather than a beginner detailing step.

    Ceramic coating over PPF

    A film-approved coating can make the film easier to clean and change its water behaviour. It does not increase impact rating, repair installation defects, stop edge lifting, or remove the need for film-safe maintenance.
